Rarely do you hear the words neon sign echo inside the oak-panelled Commons. We expect dull legislation and economic chatter, certainly not a row over what counts as real neon. But on a spring night after 10pm, Britain’s lawmakers did just that. Labour’s Yasmin Qureshi stood tall to back neon craftsmen. Her speech was fierce: authentic neon is heritage, and cheap LED impostors are strangling it. She hammered the point: if it isn’t glass bent by hand and filled with noble gas, it isn’t neon.

Chris McDonald backed her with his own support. Even the sceptics were glowing. The stats sealed the case. The pipeline of skills is collapsing. No apprentices are being trained. The push was for protection like Harris Tweed or Champagne. Even DUP MP Jim Shannon weighed in. He brought the numbers, saying neon is growing at 7.5% a year. His message was simple: the glow means commerce as well as culture. The government’s Chris Bryant wrapped up. He couldn’t resist glowing wordplay, earning heckles and neon lights laughter.

But beneath the jokes was recognition. He listed neon’s legacy: Piccadilly Circus lights. He said neon’s eco record is unfairly maligned. Where’s the problem? Because retailers blur the terms. That kills the craft. Think Champagne. If tweed is legally defined, why not neon?. The glow was cultural, not procedural. Do we want every wall to glow with the same plastic sameness? We’re biased but right: plastic impostors don’t cut it.

The Commons went neon. The Act is only an idea, but the fight has begun. If it belongs in the Commons, it belongs in your home. Skip the fakes. Support the craft.
